“Why do the nations rage? And the peoples plot in vain?”
Prince of Peace, our hearts are filled with dread today about the dangerous brinkmanship playing out between Russia and Ukraine.
We pray for “the rulers taking counsel together,” especially Presidents Zelensky, Putin and Biden, that all would deal in good faith, aware that they engage under the watchful eye of heaven.
Forgive our stubborn reach for power, the need to rule over, to dominate and oppress. Avert this disaster, God, with a flick of your wrist, a steely glance. One look at you and mountains tremble, rivers split. So let armies turn in fear.
Most of all, Lord Christ, we pray for the country of Ukraine, the breadbasket of Europe and its 40 million people. Defend them with your upraised arm.
Have mercy on those under the fist of war.
Turn swords into plowshares – for the glory of your name.
